The Naugatuck PD investigated the following incidents of interest yesterday:
• Theft – From vehicle – Exhaust taken from motorcycle – Brook St
• Theft – From vehicle – CT Reg Plate (477-YGL) - Brook St.
• Theft – Of Motorcycles (2) – 1974 Yamaha 175 / 1975 Kawasaki 175 – Brook St.
• Vandalism – To vehicle - Church St.

PRESS RELEASE August 27, 2013 NAUGATUCK POLICE DEPARTMENT PROMOTES SCHOOL BUS SAFETY, REMINDS DRIVERS TO BE CAUTIOUS WITH THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR Three school buses installed with REDFLEX Student Guardian® technology to enhance student safety Naugatuck, Conn. – (August 27, 2013) – Students around the Borough of Naugatuck who rely on school bus transportation have an extra layer of protection as they enter and exit the bus: REDFLEX Student Guardian®, an automated safety camera system for monitoring and deterring drivers who illegally pass school buses, endangering the lives of children. There are currently three buses installed with the Student Guardian technology, monitoring the most problematic routes. “The goal of the Student Guardian program is to increase safety for our school children. Distracted driving is a dangerous issue, even more dangerous when drivers are either not paying attention or become impatient while children are entering and exiting a school bus,” stated Lieutenant Bryan Cammarata, Naugatuck Police Department. “We want to increase driver awareness and decrease the possibility of a senseless accident happening around our school buses.” The Student Guardian safety camera system is installed on the front and rear driver’s side of a school bus. It monitors traffic while the bus’ stop arm and amber lights are displayed, leaving the bus driver free to focus on students. A camera is triggered to capture data as a vehicle passes the bus while children are loading and unloading. Evidence of violations, including video and high-resolution images, is submitted to local law enforcement to determine whether a citation is warranted. If an officer determines a violation occurred, the registered owner of the vehicle is mailed a citation for passing a standing school bus. The registered owner will have an opportunity to review images and video of the violation online. The fine for passing a school bus in the Borough of Naugatuck is $450. The Naugatuck Public School District reached an agreement with Redflex Traffic Systems®, Inc. to operate Student Guardian without any upfront costs. The program is fully funded by violations. Cammarata adds that the presence of this technology serves as a deterrent to breaking the law. Motorists considering the gamble are likely to abide by the law when they see the cameras. Additionally, he says this technology serves as a “police force multiplier,” allowing officers to refocus their energies on other high-priority tasks while ensuring the safety of school bus routes. According to a 2013 study by the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services, 29 states found more than 85,000 vehicles illegally passed 108,000 school buses in one day. That represents more than 15 million illegal passes nationally in a typical 180-day school year. “Student Guardian is an extremely valuable tool school districts can use to protect kids who ride the bus. It’s unrealistic to think law enforcement can patrol hundreds of bus routes on their own every day,” said Thomas O’Connor, president of Redflex’s student safety division, Redflex Student Guardian. “Not only do the safety cameras monitor and deter drivers from breaking the law, they raise community awareness about school bus safety in general.”

NPD was at Western School this afternoon to help students, parents and teachers support their six year old classmate Olivia who is sick and awaiting a new heart in a hospital in New York. The school put together an event called "Western Soak" in which four lucky teachers had the pleasure of being soaked by a bucket of water each.
